Leading, Polo Team To Play

It is proposed to play polo matches on each of the three days of the New Zealand ploughing championships and the fourteenth World Ploughing Contest in the PrebbletonBroadfield district this week. The matches will be in the afternoon each day.

The polo is being sponsored by A. R. Mackay, Ltd. The teams taking part will be Mid-Canterbury, at present the premier club in the South Island, and North Canterbury. For the third time in succession Mid-Canter-bury won the senior open section for the Gould Cup at the recent South Island polo championships in Ryans road, Christchurch. This is regarded as one of the most successful tournaments ever held.

Mid-Canterbury had the distinction at that tournament of beating Rangitikei, a North stand team that was in the South Island at the time.

The North Canterbury team was selected by the South Island selectors, Messrs R. M. D. Johnson, W. R. Lemon and T. H. Rutherford, following the recent championships, and the team

comprises E. G. Rutherford, of Amuri A, who is captain, and D. and K. Wells, of Ashley A. The matches each day will be of four chukkas, each of

seven minutes and a half duration. In giving these details the secretary of the South Island Polo Association, Mr P. M. O’Sullivan, said that there were now five polo clubs in the province with eight

teams and about 40 to 45 players. The clubs are Amuri, Ashley, Mid-Canter-bury, Geraldine and Waimate—the latter is a new club this season.
