WRECKED YACHT

Race Entry On Fire

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) SUVA, May 8.

The New Zealand yacht, Takohe, wrecked on a reef near Wilkes Passage on Saturday, was still burning yesterday morning, Mr L. Bray, publicity officer for the Nandi Airport Skindivers’ Association, said today. He said members of the association, on an expedition to the Mamanutha group of islands, had sighted the yacht and found her burning slowly inside. A rubber dinghy nearby had been ripped to shreds on the rocks. The Takohe was an entry in the Whangarei-Noumea yacht race and was on its way to Suva. Three crewmen were rescued by the pleasure cruiser, Stardust, which runs between Lautoka and the Mamanuthas. The Are started after th# yacht hit a reef. The crew had returned to the vessel but she burst into flames when they opened the hatch. It is believed the vessel had filled with inflammable gas from wet batteries.
