GEERING ROW

Threat To Resign (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 7. The national chairman of the Association of Presbyterian Laymen (Mr R. J. Wardlaw) said he was prepared to sever connexions with the church unless the situation created by Professor L. G. Geering were corrected by appropriate discipline.

He said in a statement that members of the association and other members of the Presbyterian Church had indicated that - they considered their Christian witness as Presbyterians to be seriously compromised by Professor Geering’s statements concerning the soul. “Many have also declared that, unless the position were corrected, they would sever connexions with the church,” said Mr Wardlaw.

“But I am sufficiently persuaded that there is hope in the situation to continue as a member of the church until the issue is concluded. “This will be at the assembly’s meeting in Christchurch in November,” he said.
