Man’s Body Found

The badly decomposed body of a man was found in a swamp at New Brighton on Saturday afternoon by two deaf and dumb boys, aged seven. The police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

The dead man was Robert Hugh Steers, aged 56, married, retired, of 578 Avonside drive.

The body was found about 20 yards from New Brighton road, near the Bower Hotel. The boys stopped a police car and assisted by two friends who were familiar with sign language, told the policemen of their discovery. They went with Sergeant T. J. McKenzie and Constable T. J. A. Dunn to an area of lupins. Mr Steers had been missing since February 22. An inquest will be held. The police commended the boys for their actions.
