1ST KARATE TITLES

Christchurch A Team Wins

Showing outstanding technique and fighting ability, J. Takitimu (Invercargill) won the open title at the first national championships of the Kyokushinkai Karate Association at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. A total of 31 graded karate exponents from Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill took part. Skilful combination of hand strikes, punches and kicks delivered with fierce, concentrated speed brought applause from the crowd. All strikes must stop just short of contact, but are awarded points once they are Sa st the opponent’s range of locking techniques. However, a number of resounding blows landed during the contests and two competitors retired hurt.

One of the outstanding bouts was between M. Ahern and G. Ellis, both of the Victoria University. Ellis was eliminated in the next round by the outstanding Christchurch fighter, R. Hanham, who was beaten in the final by Takitimu.

Christchurch entered three teams, the A side winning the teams’ championship. R. Tulloch (Christchurch) took the yellow belt championship, and D. Tuiriangl (Invercargill) won the white belt championship.
