Stronger Play From Lower-Placed Teams

An improvement by last year’s lower placed teams was shown in the third round of the Canterbury Basketball Association’s senior competition on Saturday. This was particularly evident in a game in which’ ia,st year's competition winner, Technical, played last year’s lowest team, Hagley B. Technical by no means took full command of the game, and Hagley showed that its form this year is a vast improvement on last season’s.

New Brighton defeated Hagley in an extremely uneven match, and Sacred Heart after an unexpectedly close struggle, managed to defeat Teachers’ College. Technical defeated Hagley B, and St. Nicholas had a bye. Results: Sacred Heart 36, Teachers* College 23. Technical 45, Hagley B 25. Mew Brighton 37, Hagley A 20. Competition points after three rounds are: Technical 6, New Brighton 4, Sacred Heart 3, Teachers’ College 2, Hagley A 2, Hagley B 1, St. Nicholas 0.

Strong Fight Teachers’ Cotlilege provided a strong fight for Sacred Heart, keeping the score even until half-time, when Sacred Heart took three goals in succession to bring the score to 16-15. After half-time. Sacred Heart from the throw-off took a stronger lead, with straight play down the field to an easily netted goal. Teachers’ College had the next pass, but rather spoiled the run by untidy play in the goal ring with back passing. However, in spite of strong defence by Sacred Heart, Teachers’ College managed to net a long goal. Teachers’ College was plagued by untidy play in its goal ring, which gave Sacred Heart’s defences the chance to return the fall to their own goal circle. Teachers’ College was still playing strongly with the captain, J. McKay, keeping her team moving, and the score was evened to 19-al'l. Sacred Heart quickly went ahead again with a competent goal by J. Harnett, followed by another by J. Jones to bring the score to 21-19. From this point, Teachers’ College lost ground. It managed to intercept a Sacred Heart pass, but failed to carry the bald to its destination because of wide passes and faulty positional play. Sacred Heart solidified its position, from 24-20 with B. Murphy playing a good defensive game. The Teachers’ College game was strangely inconsistent. There was some extremely good play in the centre, but once the ball had its second pass from the throw-off, the combination broke down. This was further aggravated by occasional poor shooting. Hagley Beaten Hagley A fell heavily to the strong attacking play of New Brighton, which rapidly took the score from 1-alil to 5-1. The eaply parts of the game were untidy with both teams guilty of til-considered play. But there was some fine play by New Brighton’s new goal at-

tack, L. Woodhead, who ably assisted J. Buchanan in taking New Brighton’s score to 9-2. Hagley players were having difficulty in evading their partners at goal, and this resulted in a large amount of rather fruitless back passing, and a lack of accuracy in goat-taking, when difficult goals had to be attempted because of the strong marking by New Brighton defences. Surprising Game The Techndcal-Hagley B clash was the most surprising game of the day, with Hagley B managing to keep the score even in the early stages of the game, with scores from 1-all to 6-all. Hagley was at fault frequently through inaccuracy at goal, and the strong play of the Technical defence, J. Mcßeth, very much restricted Hagley’s recovery in the goal. Mcßeth, with A. Boelee, S. Langrope, and S. Norman, provided an excellent combination, which was almost Impossible to upset, and this produced a beautiful display of basketball. Hagley tended to be somewhat over-enthusiastic with its passing and this often lost ground, enabling Technical to take the score to 11-7 and 12-9. C. Cotte rill, at centre for Hagley, frequently got the ball to the goal but her efforts were too often spoiled by missed goals. Hagley tried exceptionally hard, and occasionally managed a straight run from the centre to goal, but Technical was leading strongly by 22-16 at halftime. S. Langrope proved one of Technical’s greatest assets in the second spell. She has been shifted to goal this season and her play is invaluable, not only for her accurate shooting but also for her ability to retrieve balls missed at goal.

Hagley shoots were only a Little less accurate than Technical!, but the Technical defences, Mcßeth and B. Winter, did not let the Hagley shoots have a second chance. Hagley fought well through the game, providing a good match for Technical, but Technical's superior ball control and positional play enabled it to take the ultimate lead at 45-25.
