Watersiders’ Transport

At a meeting of the Combined Port Unions’ Committee at Lyttelton it was agreed that all port workers should endeavour to reach their place of work by their own transport. The chairman (Mr E. J. Watson) said that in making this decision the committee wished to emphasise that the port unions supported the railwaymen. Mr Watson said that the committee was also most concerned with recent newspaper reports of a Transport Department committee meeting called to discuss aspects of port work and the effects of use of containers, pallets and mechanisation in port operations. The Port Unions’ Committee failed to recognise the competence of a Transport Department committee to discuss this sphere of industrial activity, Mr Watson said. In any case, the Transport Department committee had not to date invited any representatives of the Combined Port Unions to state their views and opinions. These opinions would at least be based on local, practical waterfront experience, Mr Watson said.
