Eight Killed On Roads
Eight persons died at the week-end after motor accidents. Several others were injured, the Press Association reported.
A Napier man, critically injured when a truck rolled 150 feet down a bank near Hastings yesterday, died in the Hastings hospital at 2 a.m. today, about 24 hours after the accident. He was
Nathan Honatapu, aged 38. He suffered head and chest injuries In the crash and lay in the crushed cab of the truck for nearly six hours while his brother, Mr Sonny Honatapu, aged 25, walked eight miles to get help. A third man in the vehicle, Mr Henry Te Ahu, of Wairoa, was seriously injured. He walked two miles from the truck before collapsing. The hospital today reported his condition as still serious, but improving. Mr Sonny Honatapu was treated in hospital yesterday and discharged. Pedestrian Dies A pedestrian was killed when struck by a motor car on the No. 1 State Highway about half a mile south of Mercer at 1.15 a.m. this morning. He was Robert Tahitahi, married, aged 20, a labourer, of Pokeno. Mr Tahitahi and two companions who had been visiting Meremere were walking home when they were overtaken by a car which struck all three. The other two were uninjured.
Hit By Car A man was struck a car and killed instantly while he was crossing the main road outside the Masonic Hotel, St Andrews, about 6 p.m. on Saturday. He was Maurice John Hartnett, aged 67, a freezing worker, married, of Main road, St. Andrews. The car, which was travelling south, was driven by Charles William Cameron, aged 28, a
medical technologist, of 140 Ravenswood road, St. Clair, Dunedin. 2 Dead, 8 Injured Two men died and eight persons were taken to hospital after a head-on collision between two cars on the Main road north of Porirua at 4.15 а. this morning. One of the dead men was Raman Morar, aged 19, of Phillips street, Johnsonville, who was a passenger in one car. Police have not yet released the name of the second victim, who was driving the other car. Four ambulances took the eight injured people to hospital. Woman Dead An elderly woman died in the Waikato Hospital on Friday after she was injured in a motor-car smash near Tokoroa on April 28. She was Isobel Pearl Dunphy, aged 67, of Edgecumbe. Three Hit By Car One man died and two were injured in a head-on car collision near Waerenga-a-hika at б. p.m. yesterday. The dead man’s name has not yet been released. The injured men were in a satisfactory condition in hospital tonight. They were Leaf Trevor and Owen Arthur Olsen, both of Gisborne. Car Overturned A man was killed and a young woman was seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling overturned on the southern motorway on Saturday night. The dead man was Richard Kurei, aged 17, a motor mechanic, of 75 King street, Grey Lynn. Injured is I Merle Hunia, aged 19, a student teacher, of 81 Grange road. Mount Eden. She suffered internal injuries and her condition tonight is serious. The accident occurred at 9.45 p.m. near Ellerslie.
