Careers For Women

Sir,—Your recent article on the lack of university-trained women makes interesting reading. Your writer might well have mentioned that New Zealand employment practices give women little encouragement to obtain a university education. The New Zealand State Services Commission’s publication, "Careers for Graduates in the Public Service” (1966-67), lists 327 jobs requiring a university degree which are open to male applicants only. When government departments refuse to hire women graduates in the majority of positions the prospects of a woman’s attaining a satisfying position are indeed slight. New Zealand cannot afford to continue this policy of wasting the talents of half its population.—Yours, etc., B. G. WYBOURNE. May 4, 1967.
