Concern At Absence Of Crossing Near School

Concern at the lack of a pedestrian crossing in Yaldhurst road between Carmen and Russley roads has been expressed by the parents of children attending the Russley School. “The number of children crossing to attend Russley School is increasing each week,” said Mr L. R. D. Scott, president of the school’s parent-teacher association. “Fortunately, until last week no child had been hurt badly but now a youngster has been seriously injured.” Mr Scott said the record of fatalities in the area reflected the dangerous situation. The 200 yards of 30 m.p.h. speed restriction between the two roads did not slov down traffic.

“In spite of repeated application by the school committee on behalf of parents, all requests have been turned down. Parents are deeply concerned at the authorities’ persistent refusals,” said Mr Scott. The chairman of the Waimari County Council (Mr G. B. Rich) said last night that his council would investigate

the matter again. He said it had been investigated by the Transport Department on several occasions. The department, on the last occasion, felt that the number of children crossing the road did not warrant putting a pedestrian crossing there. At the time the 30 m.p.h. speed zone was imposed between Carmen and Russley roads, the council objected that it did not extend far enough to be really effective, he said.

Although tbe chairman of the Paparua County Council (Mr B. H. Warren) could not be contacted, his county clerk (Mr A. Kelly) said his council had been guided by the Transport Department which had recommended that a crossing was not necessary.
