Bids For TV Contracts
( N.Z.P. A.-Copyright) LONDON, April 18. About 40 groups have made bids for control of 15 regional commercial television contracts for tho six years from next July. Immediately after applications closed on Saturday, it was revealed that Central Scotland Television Ltd., headed by the farmer Liberal Party leader, Mr Jo Grimond, had applied for the central Scotland area. The present franchise Is held by Scottish Television Ltd, whose chairman is Lord Thomson of Fleet All existing contractors have applied for a renewal of their licences, and the seven groups applying for the new area, Yorkshire, have sparked off what the “Observer” called the “TV Gold Rush.”
TWW, present holder cf the Wales and west of England franchise, is opposed by a group led by Lord Harlech and including the actor Richard Burton and actress ISizabeth Taylor.
