Fine Performance Of ‘Raymonda’
A matinee performance of “Raymonda” on Saturday featured Robyn Croft as Raymonda, with Kelvin Coe as Jean de Brienne. Already seen and admired as a soloist. Miss Croft gave a most satisfying performance in the principal role.
Ker’s was a sparkling Raymonda, from the first solos to the last—the pizzicato variation in act 1 was particularly delightful. . This dancer is poised and beautiful and showed no signs of flagging in this very taxing role, which demands great reserves of stamina.
Kelvin Coe is another younger dancer of tremendous capabilities. Fairly slight in build, he is light and powerful In his leaps, assured as a partner. His solo variation in the last act deservedly received great acclaim.
Paul Wright as Abderachtnan again impressed with its fiery characterisation and impression of power. This last view of “Rayrnonda” left some impressions which will assuredly be long-lasting. This is a ballet with an abundance of choreographic ideas. Particularly memorable is the magnificent
waltz in act 1, scene 2, rich in all its movements, with a fascinating variety of patterns, all of the greatest beauty. The grace of the male dancers’ movements, probably attributable to the graceful and dynamic Nureyed himself is another facet of “Raymonda” which will .always remain in the memory. The season by the Australian Ballet continues tonight with “The Display,” “Pineapple Poll” and four pas de deux, and on Thursday they open a three-night season of “Giselle.”—P.S.
