More Respiratory Infections

Respiratory infections increased by 155 per cent in the four weeks ended March 19 compared with the figures in the preceding four weeks, according to a report issued by the research committee of the Canterbury faculty of the College of General Practitioners. The report is part of a continuing survey, made in cooperation with the Health Department Sixty-six doctors sent in returns, compared with 44 in the previous period. They reported 332 respiratory viral infections, as against 130. The number of stapyhlococcal infections in adults rose from 45 to 94, and the incidence in children rose from 57 to 75. There was also a pronounced increase in the number of otitis media, or middle ear, infections, from 25 to 81. Chickenpox, measles, whooping cough, and acute tonsilitis were also more prevalent Several cases of bee-sting, one severe, and two cases of herpetic skin infection were reported. All cases listed by the report rose from 561 to 1112. Diarrhoea and vomiting cases were described as mild for alleges.
