Beaten By Cullers

'N.Z. Pr«„ Association) WELLINGTON, April 14. Wapiti hunters who went into Fiordland for the first open season there found that Government cullers had been there first, one of the hunters said today. The hunter, Mr B. Stewart, aged 30, of Korokoro, said the hunters had paid the Government £2O each to hunt in the national park, but they had been forestalled by Government cullers. Mr Stewart’s 12-point, classic and heavy timbered wapiti head is believed to be the best shot in Fiordland this year.

Mr Stewart said the hunters were “really upset” at the wanton killing. “The trip cost me £75 altogether, and for some it cost more than£loo, depending on the area they went to. We were lucky going to a remote and rugged area, but those hunters who were allocated flat country just had carcases and frightened animals,” he said.
