N.Z. 2nd And 4th In Table Tennis

New Zealand finished fourth in its group of five teams in the first stage of the Swaythling Cup men’s team event of the world table tennis championships at Stockholm.
The New Zealanders secured their position after a convincing 5-1 victory over Spain yesterday. Earlier, they had lost 1-5 to East Germany and Indonesia, and 0-5 to the seeded Jugoslavians. The New Zealand women’s Carbillion Cup team was placed second in its group after beating the United States, 3-1, and Norway, 3-0, and losing, 0-3, to the favourite Japan. Teams finishing in second place of the eight first stage groups are divided into two new groups of four teams.
The winners of these two groups then play each other for ninth and tenth place. The New Zealand women’s team is drawn against Austria, Jugoslavia and Bulgaria, and the winner will meet the victor of the group consisting of Holland, Poland, France and Sweden.
