‘Nigeria On Point Of Disintegrating’

LAGOS, April 14.
Eastern Nigeria’s dissident military governor, Lieutenant-Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu, said yesterday that the whole country was on the point of disintegrating and swift action was needed to avert it, according to a Nigenan broadcasting network report.
He made the statement when the United States Ambasador, Mr Albert Matthews, called on him in the region’s capital, Enugu, the radio said. Colonel Ojukwu said he was prepared for a round-table conference to settle the country’s constitutional crisis. The Eastern Region is in conflict with the rest of the country as to the degree of autonomy each region should have and has refused to accept the Authority of the Central Government, which came to power after a military coup last July.
Colonel Ojukwu has asked Ghana, Liberia, Ethiopia and the United Arab Republic to try to mediate in the dispute as a last-ditch effort to avert trouble.
