Winter Feed Survey
QYSTEMS of winter feeding ° used by North Canterbury farmers are being examined in a survey being done in Cheviot county. The information is being collected by Mr B. Withell, farm advisory officer with the Department of Agriculture in Cheviot It will provide background material for a paper which may be given at the Waipara farmers* conference.
Although there are a large number of combinations of sources of winter feed, Mr Withell says that it should
be possible to establish broad patterns within several farming types. Likewise it should be possible to draw up practical feeding standards using the information gathered in the survey. Problems facing farmers in winter feeding will be rated —perhaps further investigation and development of alternative methods of feeding could be important, he says. The effects of the recent abundant feed sitation will be taken into account in the interpretation of the results.
