TWO SPIRITS DEARER

Increases Ry Some Firms Some wine-and-spirit merchants in Christchurch have increased their prices for whisky and brandy. A spokesman for Mating and Company, Ltd., said yesterday that whisky was now 40s a bottle and standard lines of brandy about 355. Both had gone up about Is 6d a bottle. The spokesman said the increase was applied last week, and was a result of higher landing and freight charges through Lyttelton. A spokesman for Bishop and Company, Ltd., said that whisky and brandy prices had risen about a month ago, and were now 40s a bottle for whisky and 35s for standard brandy. A spokesman for Fletcher, Humphreys, and Company, Ltd., said there had been no increases in prices either of whisky or brandy. An executive member of the Canterbury Wine and Spirit Merchants’ Association, Mr R. G. F. Kingscote, said yesterday that any increases which had occurred had been imposed by individual merchants. The association had not met to discuss prices recently and had no power to fix prices. The executive officer of the Canterbury Hotel Association (Mr E. H. Williams) said yesterday that his organisation was not aware of any increases in the prices of whisky or brandy.
