Objection To Rezoning Fendalton Shops

Four owners of shop property at the Clyde road-Fen-dalton road-Memorial avenue intersection objected before the Waimairi County Council’s town planning committee last night to a council proposal to rezone the residential B part of the shopping area to residential A.

The objectors were the estate of F. W. Mathews, Mr F. W. Panckhurst, Mr K. D. Cockburn, and the Turner family partnership. Mr P. Wynn-Williams, for the Turner partnership, said the hearing should be adjourned. The council had previously adjourned a conditional use hearing from the partnership because the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board had not yet given judgment on the wider question of zoning the shopping area and streetwidening proposals. Messrs A. M. Brown and A. L. Bell (Mr K. W. Frampton) appealed against the rezoning of land at the north-east corner of Grampion road and Jocelyn street from commercial A to residential A.

Mr Frampton said the objectors had bought the land for £2OOO as the site for four or five shops, under the original commercial zoning. They had just b«en given a permit to build four shops on the opposite corner.

Mobil Oil (N.Z.) Ltd. (Mr R. J. de Goldi) objected to the proposed rezoning of land in Ham road between Creyke road and Montana avenue from commercial A to residential A.

The Regional Planning Authority supported the council, saying that ribbon commercial development on Ham road was undesirable and there were objections to the location of a service station, on traffic grounds. The council was also supported by Messrs I. D .Wood, G. Sansome, F. W. Gurnsey, R. L. Simpson and E. Butts (Mr C. M. Roper), who said commercial use of the land in a good housing area would be against the public interest.

The committee will make recommendations to the council.
