Key Matches For Basketball Teams
The second round of the Canterbury A grade men’s basketball competition tomorrow will be a vital one for most teams but it will be especially important for Rex and Y-Boys.
The two bottom teams last season, they meet in the first senior match of the day, and this promises to be a stimulating struggle. Neither side can afford to lose if it hopes to improve on its previous position. The loser of this match will probably finish bottom of the current competition. In the evening round both Rex and Y-Boys displayed better form than they had at the same time last season. They will have a solid core of experienced players: N. Saunders and M. Mackay, former Canterbury representatives, playing for Rex, and K. Williams, a former Dunedin and Nelson representative, and W. Stoelhurst, returning to the game after nine years, for Y-Boys. High School Old Boys, the bye team last week, will be making its first competitive appearance against University B. This match should also be close, although the students, strengthened by the New Zealand representative, C. Morris, and the New Zealand
Universities player, W. E. Smith, should have an advantage. The Old Boys team is the youngest in the grade. It has an average age of less than 23. Of special interest will be the performance of the colt, K. Luxton, playing in his first A grade game. Burnham, which finished in the bottom section last season, can hardly be expected to beat University A, but the game should not be too onesided.
