DIED IN GAS CHAMBER
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAN QUENTIN, (California,) April 13.
Aaron Mitchell killer of a Sacramento policeman, died in the gas chamber in San Quentin goal yesterday. It was California’s first execution for more than four years . The 37-year-old Negro, who attempted suicide by slashing his arm on Tuesday afternoon, was half-carried by two guards into the apple green octagonal chamber at San Quentin prison. As Mitchell went to his death opponents of capital punishment protested in front of the prison, where many had maintained a night-long vigil. It was the first major protest at the prison since Caryl Chessman, a convicted kidnapper and rapist turned author, lost his 12-year battle to escape the gas chamber in 1960.
