‘SPECTATOR’ SOLD

A Scottish industrialist has bought the 139-year-old “Spectator,” an independent Rightwing weekly, from a Conservative M.P., Mr lan Gilmour, a magazine spokesman has disclosed. He is Mr Harold Creighton, aged 39, chairman of the Scottish Machine Tool Corporation. It is his first venture into publishing. Mr Creighton has promised to maintain the independence of the “Spectator” and retain the present editorial staff. The price is not known, but it is said to be more than £70,000. Economic conditions have made life difficult for several British periodicals, and there had been speculation about the future of the “Spectator” for some time.
