“The Bottle-neck”

Sir, —I am amazed at the disclosure that the City Council is allowing no extra width for the roadway in the “Botle-neck.” Widening the footpath instead of widening the road is typical of Christchurch practice. While large sums are being spent on road widening, overwide footpaths and grass verges are formed, as in a main north and south roadway, St. Johns street, and narrow winding roads built suitable for rural Europe of 100 years ago, as in Hornby, with unnecessarily wide footpaths and grass verges, entirely out of proportion to the narrow road, and, to make matters worse, complete with dangerous kerbside power poles. A lot of Christchurch 11 and 12-foot traffic lanes could, with advantage, be reduced nearer to many in Britain which are only Bft wide. —Yours, etc., SETH NEWELL. April 13, 1967.
