SUSPENDED SENTENCE
African Woman Shot Dead (N.Z.P A. Reuter—Copyright) PRETORIA, April 12. A white farmer was given a one-year suspended sentence in Pretoria on Monday for accidentally shooting an African woman. The farmer, Hendrik Buckle, aged 58, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and said the woman had been one of a group of Africans smoking dagga (Indian hemp) in a tobacco drying shed on his property. He fired a shot into the shed to scare them off. Shortly afterwards a woman stumbled out groaning that she had been hit in the chest. She died later. The judge said that, although culpable homicide was a serious crime, the circumstances of the case showed that the shooting was almost purely accidental.
