CHARGES OF ASSAULT

Two Boxers Fined Brian Kendall, the old New Zealand bantamweight boxing champion and a New Zealand representative at the Commonwealth Games last year, was yesterday convicted and fined a total of £lO on two charges of assault on March 31 and April 1. He appeared in the Magistrate'S Court before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M. One of the charges, to which he pleaded not guilty, was of assaulting Linden John Kilkelly, a police constable, in the execution of his duty on April 1. He was fined £3 on this charge. The other charge was of assaulting a man, whose name was suppressed, on March 31. He pleaded guilty to this charge. “Kendall was in the Central Police Station on another matter when he became aggressive and started to hit me. As a result, I received bruising to the side of the face and a sprained wrist," said Constable Kilkelly. Sergeant A. D. Stevenson said that Kendall was the New Zealand boxing champion and representative. “I did not like the police attitude, and as I was being placed in the cells, I was kneed in the stomach,” Kendall said in explanation of his actions at the police station. Second Accused Ronald David Carstairs, aged 18, who was described as a New Zealand boxing champion, was also convicted and fined £2O for assaulting a man, whose name was suppressed, on March 31. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant Stevenson said Carstairs was with Kendall on March 31, and they both assaulted the man whose name was suppressed. “He gave no trouble at the police station when questioned about the incident,” he said.
