Assaulted Doctor Leaves Hospital

WHANGAREI, April 12.
Dr. M. N. Paewai left Whangarei Hospital today uncertain of the success of the eye surgery necessary after he was attacked on Monday night
He was asMulted with a claw hammer by a Maori in Kaikohe after being lured to a house by a false call to a sick cMld. He suffered an injury to Ms left eye and a two-inch scalp wound. A three-hour operation on the eye on Monday night at Whangarei attempted to restore the, tear duct by the insertion ot a tube. The doctor will not know for six Weeks whether the duct ends will successfully join. He will not be able to wear
his contact lenses so a special pair of glasses are necessary to enable Mm to continue overseeing a new house he is building, and resume Ms practice.
In the Kaikohe area a police search is continuing for a man and Ms wife wanted in connexion with the assault
Dr. Paewai said today in hospital that it would be a difficult job to find them. "They are used to living on nothing,” he said, “and used to the bush.”
