SPEAKING IN TONGUES
Report To Presbytery Those who had the gift of speaking in tongues must not tyrannise over those who did not making their experience the norm for everybody, according to a report received by the Christchurch Presbytery at its monthly meeting this week. Speaking in tongues had a scriptural authority found in the writings of St Paul, who said that it was best suited to private prayer, said the preliminary report from the life and mission committee. The report noted dangers associated with speaking in tongues. “Both the possession of this gift and the nonpossession of it can lead to spiritual pride. “When .division in the Church accompanies the gift of speaking in tongues, this may be due to an un-Christian sense of superiority among those who have the gift, or a failure of Christian charity among those who do not have the gift, or a combination of both.” Members of the Presbytery were asked to consider the report and comment on it in writing.
