POWELL WINS
Congress Dilemma (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 12. The Rev. Adam Clayton Powell, reelected to the United States Congress by Harlem voters yesterday after his expulsion last month, has presented Congress with a new problem. The Negro Baptist minister, ousted from the House of Representatives for misuse of Congressional funds, was reelected easily yesterday in the New York Negro district that he had represented for 22 years. Mr Powell, a Democrat and the pastor of Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church, relaxed in his island retreat at Bimini in the Bahamas, as he polled nearly 28,000 votes against a combined total of about 4500 for his Republican and Conservative opponents, both of whom were also Negroes. The former Congressman is unable to appear in New York for fear of arrest for contempt of court in connexion with his failure to settle a libel action. He has not been to Harlem this year. Tonight Congressional leaders were undecided on their course -of action in view of Mr Powell’s election.
No Contact.—Bad atmospheric conditions in the South Atlantic made radio contact with Sir Francis Chichester impossible yesterday, “The Times” reported. He has not been heard from for more than a week. — London, April 12.
