Linwood Cemetery

Sir,—The Linwood cemetery Is being neglected. Ten years or so ago it had a charming aspect. Now it looks a ruin except for the entrance. The caretaker has to look after this cemetery and the Memorial Cemetery. It is too much for one man. The

council could surely employ one man to care for Linwood Cemetery. Surely we can be generous enough to keep old graves tidy, as most relatives of those buried there would also have' left this world. A city with respect for past citizens will flourish, but not if it is all “top show.”— Yours, etc, VISITOR. April 5, 1967. [The Director of Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) replies: “It is true that Linwood Cemetery could do with another employee. In the meantime, we have our three scythesmen tidying the plots before spraying. It is appreciated that the cemetery looks untidy but in fact the City Council is responsible only for the maintenance of pathways and vacant ground. We are trespassing on the plots.”]
