COMPLAINTS MADE
Poultry Farm Litter Action will be taken by the Paparua County Council if a nuisance arises from the inadequate disposal of manure and litter from poultry farms. This decision was reached by the council at its meeting last night, and it was also decided to tell all poultry farmers in the county that steps would be taken to see that adequate dead bird and litter disposal methods were maintained. Complaints had been made of offensive smell and dust from stockpiles of poultry manure on two farms on the Old West Coast road at Yaldhurst, said the health inspector (Mr G. W. L. Fairhall). There was a further report required on a smell nuisance from the dumping of poultry offal in a pit at Waterholes road, he said. “These problems all concern large broiler houses for the raising of meat chickens," said Mr Fairhall. “There has been a considerable increase in the number of units in the county, .and this will continue. “Investigations have shown that the disposal of waste products from this fast-grow-ing new industry can create public health problems.” Mr Fairhall said that there was full-time occupation for someone prepared to specialise in the disposal of Utter from these properties.
