DEMOCRACY IN SPAIN
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MALAGA (Spain), April 10. The Spanish Roman Catholic Church, long considered a bastion of Spanish conservatism, yesterday issued a sweeping eight-point programme calling for the establishment of an “authentic democracy” in Spain. The document, the most detailed and precise statement on man’s role in his society issued by the Spanish Church since the Civil War, was announced after a week-long meeting of the country’s Roman Catholic hierarchy in Malaga. The Church document specifically stated that ail citizens had a right and a duty to participate in the public and political life of their nation. The document was seen as the Spanish Church’s embracing of the liberal doctrines backed by the recent Vatican Ecumenical Council.
