More Vietnam Troops Sought

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 9. More New Zealand ground troops were needed in Vietnam, the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) said tonight on his return from a visit to South-east Asia.

“There is clear need for more ground troops there to bring the war to a speedy conclusion,” he said.

He believed a quick victory was possible. Questioned on a report that In Vietnam he had said he would make a recommendation to Cabinet for more troops, Mr Thomson said: “I will report to the Government on my tour of inspection and on the military position as I see it I see a need for more defence support, particularly ground troops.”

Mr Thomson said be also explored the possibilities of sending elements of other armed forces, but concluded ground troops were the most necessary. He included Special Air Service units as ground troops. Vietnamese authorities made no requests or hints to him for further aid, he said.

“Since I was last in South Vietnam there has been a very considerable change in the military situation. It is obvious now that North Vietnam has no hope of military victory,” he said.
