AUCKLAND, April 9. A man charged with stealing £lOO from a totalisator at Ellerslie racecourse on Friday afternoon told Mr W. J. Meade, SM, on Saturday that he intended to return the money, but had been caught by the police “a bit too quickly.” Rene Tamaki Tumahai, aged 27, an unemployed storeman. pleaded guilty to stealing the money. He was convicted and remanded until Friday for a probation report and sentence.
Sergeant B. P. Donnelly
said Tumahai reached across the totalisator counter on the first floor of the members’ stand and grabbed a bundle of £1 notes about 3 p.m.
He was arrested at the Glen Innes Hotel at 4.20 p.m. Tumahai told the
Magistrate that he had taken the money on the spur of the moment “The police caught me a bit too quickly,” he said. “I was going to return it”
