Two Wins For Trainer

The Templeton trainer, J. W. Smolensk!, produced two winners at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s annual meeting at Rangiora Raceway on Saturday. Trader Horn was successful in the first leg of the on-course concession double, the First Spotswood Handicap, a race for which he was a hot favourite, Sleeman, at double-figure odds, won the Our Thorpe Handicap. Trader Horn led from end to end to win the First Spotswood Handicap. He. was always going easily and won by two lengths and a half from Silver Strip, which made up ground to shade Early Frost and Fanlight The second leg of this double, the Second Spotswood Handicap, was won by Finesse, which outfinished Golden Fleece, and beat him by half a head. There was merit in the effort of Golden Fleece as he was slow away and covered extra ground.

The Trader Horn—Finesse combination paid £l5 15s 6d for £l, while the Trader Horn—-Golden Fleece combination paid £l4 10s 6d for £l. Master Kent was a dominating favourite for this race. He set most of an easy pace until the straight and, then showed no fight, finishing eighth. The 2/3 favourite, Don Carlos, was handy until the final furlong and then tired to fifth. Highland Fortress, by U. Scott from Superfortress, the dam also of Peerswlck and Double Cross, led throughout the Parnassus Handicap and gained a deserved first win for Mr C. Blakely of Hororata.
