Holder Knocked Out In Cup
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter — Copyright) LONDON. Everton, holder of the English Football Association Cup, was knocked out by Nottingham Forest in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Forest, which is challenging Manchester United for the English League championship, was a goal down at halftime, but came back to win 3-2.
Chelsea, which was eliminated by Sheffield Wednesday in last year’s semi-final, gained revenge on the Yorkshire team with a 1-4 victory before more than 52,000 spectators at Stamford Bridge. R. Tambling was taken off the field on a stretcher with only 14 minutes to go and it looked as if the London team would have to struggle for a replay, but J. Baldwin scored for Chelsea with the last kick of the match. Victory to Leeds
Leeds United reached the semi-finals for only the second time in its history by beating Manchester City, 1-0. City was superior in the first half, playing fast, clever football, but did not take its chances.
Leeds’ winning goal came after 51 minutes when the England centre-half, J. Charlton, headed home a corner kick.
Tottenham Hotspur was held to a goalless drew by the second division club, Birmingham City, at Birmingham. Birmingham, which has never won the cup, had the Tottenham defence at full stretch during the last 30 minutes of the game, but could not break through. The teams replay at Tottenham oh Wednesday. In a reduced league programme, none of the leading teams in the first division was in action, but Blackpool will be relegated to the second division after its 1-0 defeat by Sheffiejd United. In Scotland, Celtic and Rangers both had away victories, Celtic 2-0 at Motherwell and Rangers 1-0 at Stirling. With three matches remaining, Celtic leads Rangers by two points. Results:-'-■NCLISH CUP
