BLESSING OF BOATS
Ceremony At Redcliffs Two skiffs from the t.s. Cornwell and the Sumner Lifeboat Institution’s Rescue II were blessed by the Rev. L. F. Allison, of Mount Pleasant, in a ceremony attended by more than 200 persons yesterday. The training ship’s wharf at Redcliffs was.then opened by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk). The ceremony of blessing the. boats is normally held every three years. It was arranged by the Sumner-Red-cliffs sub-branch of the Navy League. Those attending the ceremony included sea cadets from t.s. Cornwell, their parents, and representatives from H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus and the Sea Cadet Corps, as well as persons who had helped by giving time, money or goods towards the construction of the wharf and its equipment. The structure of the wharf was completed in 1964 and it has since been equipped with davits, reels and stanchions. The structure itself, costing more than £lOOO, was paid off last year.
The ceremony concluded with a demonstration of “away sea boat” with a skiff and crew of five, in which the boat was lowered and released from davits on the wharf.
