Negroes Fight Riot Police On Campus
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NASHVILLE (Tennessee), April 9. The Southern state capital of Nashville erupted into violence last night.
Negro students waged a four-hour battle with armed riot police on a university campus.
Minor demonstrations were reported ail over the city. One Negro student was shot in the leg and several other people, including 10 police-
men, were injured during a wild melee. About 800 students at the predominantly Negro Fisk University were involved.
Steel-helmeted riot police fired tear-gas at a dormitory from which students were firing pellet guns and throwing rocks, bricks and bottles. At least one policeman fired back at the students. Others fired shots into the air. At the height of the battle a “Molotov cocktail” exploded and burned. Many arrests were made, mostly of Negroes.
Most of the hurt policemen had minor injuries caused by flying stones, bottles and other objects. Hundreds of riot and city police cordoned off the University and a nearby medical school and by early today, more than four hours after the start of the trouble, it was reported that the situation was under control. FLARED UP Minor demonstrations also flared up in widely-scattered parts of the city, but no other injuries or arrests were reported.
