“More Architects Wanted”

Sir, —The statement attributed to me in your interview in Saturday’s issue that “New Zealand needs more architects” is true, but only in the context which I stated, and which was omitted from

your report. New Zealand, as an expanding country, will undoubtedly need many more architects in the long-term, particularly if they are properly employed on many kinds of important work on which, at present, their skills seem to be insufficiently used. But here, as in the United Kingdom at the present time, architects seem to be more affected-by lack of work and opportunities resulting from economic difficulties. The immediate need, therefore, is to ensure that the talented architects you have are given opportunities and encouragement. I have already met two architects of great ability who will be sailing for Britain within the next few months because they have not found the opportunities here which they seek in housing, school design and town planning. This is a brain drain which you can ill afford.—Yours, MALCOLM MacEWEN, Editor, Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects. April 8, 1967.
