N.Z. Round Fired In Clay Shoot
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. Th* 1967 New Zealand clay target international team which shot yesterday at Hamilton will have to wait until the end of July to learn how it performed in the Commonwealth teams match for the Mackintosh Trophy. The scores of the team were not disclosed. They were sent to the English Clay Pigeon Shooting Association and the results of the match will be announced after the association's shoot at Dublin on July 21. The other participating countries in this event are Australia, Canada, South Africa, Wales, Scotland. Ireland and Rhodesia. Teams ere comprised of 30 shooters, the 25 highest in each to count. Each team member shoots at 100 targets, scoring three points for a first barrel break and two points for a second barrel. Highest Scorers The “high gun’’ in this year’s New Zealand team which shot its section of the match on the
concluding day of the national tournament were two of New Zealand’s leading trap shooters, H. C. Walker (Hakataramea) and R. W. S. Cavanagh (Wellington), who returned the top scores of 295 points out of a possible of 300. Cavanagh and Walker will now jointly hold the Willoughby Norrie Silver Pigeon Trophy. Walker is a past Australian champion and won the 1966 skeet championship shoot at Christchurch. He was joint “high gun" of the 1955 New Zealand international team. Cavanagh has shot consistently well in several events at tills year's tournament, but his effort yesterday was the best of the week. He was top qualifier for this team two years ago.
