Jockey Could Have Successful Day

"The Press" Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH.

Fine weather in Palmerston North has assured Loofah of favouritism in today’s Manawatu Mile, feature sprint event at the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting. The likelihood of a fast track favours Loofah which, until his last start failure in the Auckland Easter Handicap, was hailed as one of the sprint finds of the season.

Awapuni should be an ideal course for the Levin horse which needs room for his long stride. He will appreciate also the small field, an aspect of the race which should ensure the favourite a trouble-free passage. W. D. Skelton passed up the opportunity to remain at Riccarton and ride S. A. Brown’s team, rather than break his association with Loofah. He rates the horse one of the best in the country at a mile. If Skelton’s judgment is correct Loofah will run away with the first leg of today’s double and, should this be the case, Skelton could have a notable day, for his is also engaged for the pre-post favourite, Yoshiko, in the second leg. Yoshiko, after a brilliant track trial on Thursday, will be at restricted odds. The way she sped over five furlongs in her final gallop left no doubts in the minds. of her connexions. Although Yoshiko has been beaten at each of her two open events so far, there have been excuses for her. On each occasion she made the home turn against the rail and her challenger has finished wide out on the track. Both riders felt that she would have fought on right to the end, had she been aware of a horse moving up to her as she is particularly game in a tight finish. This will be Skelton’s first ride on her and he should suit her.

Skelton could be a good jockey to follow at the meeting. Several of his other mounts have better than average chances. Passenger should gain his first success for Skelton, for he is a lazy galloper likely to respond well to a vigorous style. His opposition is rather weak.

Skelton’s best chance of a long price comes in the last race, the Adderstone Welter Handicap. In this event he rides Cephas, a horse very definitely on the improve. With 81b over-weight at Feilding last week, Cephas overcame a slow start to wind up a creditable ninth in the Goodbehere Memorial Handicap, first leg of the double. He has made rapid improvement in each start since coming back from a spell and this week he could pay a dividend. He is a good type of horse for welter racing and he will find 7-11 well within his range. Selections: 11.15 a.m.—Maiden Plate: Master Brynn.
