LAKER NOW FORGIVEN
“Seven-Year Sentence” (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. J. C. Laker, the off-spin bowler who was dropped from honorary membership of the M.C.C. after writing his memoirs, heard yesterday that be has been reinstated to honorary membership, the “Daily Sketch” reported. Laker, who set a bowling record against Australia in a test match at Old Trafford in 1956 when he took 19 wickets for 90 runs, retired from first-class cricket in 1960 at the age of 38. Withdrawing his honorary membership meant that Laker was unable to enter dressing rooms at the Oval where he was for so long a player for Surrey, and also he could not get free admission to the pavilion. When he was reinstated yesterday. Laker said: “I feel as though I have been released from a seven-year sentence.”
