THREATENED STRIKE
N.Y. Newspaper Talks Continue (N.Z. P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) NEW YORK, March 31. Negotiations to avert a strike by five of New York City’s major daily newspapers continued early today after the midnight deadline was extended by mutual agreement. The mediator, Mr Theodore Kheel, said the 10 unions involved had waived their “no contract, no work” policy to permit talks to continue on new contracts. The old contract expired at midnight. The unions represent some 17,000 employees of the five newspapers. A few hours before the deadline, the president of the Publishers’ Association, Mr John Gaherin, sounded a note of cautious optimism. “I’m confident that nobody wants a strike. I sincerely hope that we'll be able to find an accommodation to the situation by the midnight deadline,” he said.
