£1 NOTES FORGED
Work Of A ‘Master’
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, March 31. Scotland Yard counterfeit experts are hunting for a master forger who they say has produced the best forged £1 notes they have encountered, according to the “Evening News.” Detectives say that the man is asute enough to limit his output to about £6O a week—sufficient to give himself a comfortable living. So perfect are the notes that banks, shops and even Scotland Yard experts have been unable to detect a flaw. An official at the Bank of England printing works brought the forgeries to light when he detected the only imperfection—a dot the size of a pinhead on the bottom right-hand corner of the notes beneath the head of the Queen. Scotland Yard knows the forger has been in production since 1963, during which time he is estimated to have produced notes to the value of £12,000.
