UNIVERSITIES’ SPORTS Otago Retains Shield
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. Otago University yesterday retained its tournament shield after the final day’s competition in the New Zealand Universities’ Easter sports.
Starting the day with a points deficit, Otago won both of yesterday’s events, cricket and tennis. Otago scored 50 points, Victoria 40, Canterbury 30, Auckland 24 and Massey six. Otago clinched the tourna-
men with a first innings win over Massey in the cricket section. It was untroubled hitting a quick 120 for five declared in reply to Massey’s total of 116. Canterbury needed an outright win over Auckland to win the cricket section, and with a first innings of 220, looked to be in a good position, but Auckland defended stubbornly and prevented Canterbury gaining an outright victory. M. Redall top scored for Canterbury with 63, and was ably supported by D. Cowie and C. Kirk, who each scored 31.
The match between Lincoln and Victoria ended in a draw. Massey finished second in the cricket section with Canterbury third. Otago dominated the tennis competition to win from Victoria and Canterbury. The men’s singles final produced some first-class tennis when J. Martin (Canterbury) beat G. Boddy (Lincoln), 64, 6-3.
The women's singles title went to Miss M. Kent (Otago) who beat Miss J. Hapgood (Canterbury), 6-2, 6-3.
