WAR IN BRIEF
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAIGON, March 28. An official United States military spokesman said yesterday there was nothing to indicate that Saigon was in “mortal danger” of being shelled by rockets. Informed American and Vietnamese sources had said there were intelligence reports of Viet Cong guerrillas constructing rocket emplacements around the city and reports of the bringing in 140millimetre rockets. The spokesman said the reports of emplacements being built around the city had been proved false. There had been some digging, he said, but it was for agricultural purposes. WASHINGTON, March 28. The United States Defence Department reported last night that Communist freighters in North Vietnam’s major port of Haiphong fired on American planes on two occasions last year. The Defence Department said it did not know the nationality of the vessels. SAIGON, March 28.
United States Navy bombers from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Enterprise pounded a fuel depot and a missile site within five miles of the North Vietnamese port of Haiphong yesterday, the United States Military Command announced today.
