Back And Forth Border raiders yesterday smuggled the northern town of Berwick-on-Tweed back into Scotland after six centuries of English rule. The raiders—believed to be Scottish nationalists removed England-Scotland border signs normally standing three miles north of Berwick and replanted them south of the town. Berwick has officially changed hands 18 times between England and Scotland.—London, March 27. Synthetic Tobacco Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., and the Imperial Tobacco Company, Ltd., have formed a new company to develop synthetic tobacco. Chemists at the 1.C.1. factory at Stevenston, Ayrshire, have been conducting research into new materials with Imperial Tobacco Company chemists. Asked if the venture, which started in secret last year, was aimed at producing a tobacco free of cancer risks, a spokesman said: “All health hazards are being thoroughly investigated in the research.”—London, March 27. Road Blocked The Arthur’s Pass highway was blocked for an hour on Sunday when a truck slipped into the water-race at the side of the road two miles from Otira at 4.45 p.m. The truck was returned to the road with the aid of Ministry of Works jacks. About 18 cars were delayed by the blockage. Mild Day Christchurch had mild weather for the last day of the Easter holidays yesterday. The maximum temperature, recorded at 2 p.m., was 64 degrees. The temperature rose from 57 degrees at 6 a.m. to 61 degrees at noon. There was a southerly breeze in the afternoon, and the sky was mainly cloudy. No rain was recorded.
