Student Dies On Mountain

DUNEDIN, March 27.

A 19-year-old Green Island student died on Mount Awful, near Wanaka, after a climbing accident on Sunday.

He was Michael Cooper, a medical student, of 5 Benfell street, Green Island. Mr Cooper was with a party of four other climbers, all students aged 19, from the Dunedin area. The accident happened about 8 p.m. when the party was climbing at an altitude of about 3000 ft Mr Cooper fell over a 50ft bluff and lay injured and unconscious. Two of the party set out for help to Mount Albert, arriving there at about 10.20 a.m. yesterday. Mr Cooper’s body was brought out to Wanaka in the afternoon. Field Scholar Mount Awful is in the Wilkin river area, about 36 miles north of Wanaka township. Mr Cooper was a first year student at Otago University and an experienced tramper and climber.

He was educated at King’s High School, Dunedin, where he was head prefect for six months in 1965, before going to America as a Field Service scholar.
