TROTTING Viking Water Just Beats Favourite

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Viking Water won the C. F. Mark Memorial at Alexandra Park on Saturday, narrowly beating the win favourite, Elegant Hanover. Lonesome Valley was a creditable third, a length behind Elegant Hanover. Viking Water did not get away too well. The early pace was not very strong, however, and he was reasonably handy with a mile to go. P. T. Wolfenden had him sixth at the half-mile, and he was content to stay there to the home turn, where Elegant Hanover was right behind him. Viking Water made the bend much better than Elegant Hanover and quickly opened a lead of several lengths. He looked set for an easy win with 100 yards to go, but Elegant Hanover unwound a brilliant burst and Viking Water was all out to hold him off by a neck. Lonesome Valley and Herby Tryax were always prominent. They kept going gamely, without looking like doing any better. Prince Garry’s success in the second leg, the Akarana Handicap, was well deserved. He had looked extremely unlucky not to have done better than fourth on the first night of the meeting. Weather and track conditions were ideal. Results:
