Billy Joe Fancied For Ashburton

If the result follows betting trends in the Lauriston Two-year-old Handicap at Ashburton today Billy Joe should line up in the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton next Monday with a last-start win.

Ordinarily Billy Joe would have been one of the most popular fancies for the second leg of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s oncourse concession double. But Canny Day, Shewetta and Never Again—three wellperformed youngsters—have dropped out of the field and he will be a firm favourite.

Mr W. H. Williamson’s Resurgent colt was a stylish winner on his home course last month. His track gallops in training since indicate he has maintained a high standard of fitness. The hardest for Billy Joe to beat should be, on form, Ngatua and James Arthur. Both these Washdyke-trained youngsters take time to get balanced but both should run out six furlongs very strongly on the roomy Ashburton course. Frafre is another which could have solid backing. This Oamaru-trained Comte de Grasse filly showed promise by finishing third at Wingatui last month at her first start. If Conway Stewart was helped by his first race experience at Motukarara early this month he could be the

best of the others. He shaped like an early improver when he matched Billy Joe for pace in their heat of the barrier trials last Tuesday morning. Command Performance could start the day right for Riccarton stables by winning the Winchmore High-weight, first leg of the course double. Anasiwa and Royal Master, which are also Riccartontrained, are expected to be Command Performance’s strongest rivals. Seminole and Kalimera are fancied for the T.A.B. double, which will be on the Caltex Gold Cup and the Coldstream Handicap. Tumble and Gingerbread may be the hardest for Seminole to beat in the first leg. The best second-leg chances, beside Kalimera, could be Her Pal and Carester. Cumberland would not run in the Caltex Gold Cup, said his trainer. B. S. Finlayson. R. B. Taggart was not certain yesterday whether Warm Up would start in the same race. Finlayson will have to forgo his riding engagements. In a

fall at the week-end he fractured a finger and injured his back. Quick Flight, which injured a joint playing in his paddock during the week, had dropped out of the Coldstream Handicap. The injury could cost him a start in the Great Easter Handicap next Monday. The track is carrying a thick sole of grass and is in excellent order. 12.15 p.m WINCHMORE HIGH-WEIGHT, £250; Im.—Windvale Lad (6) 9-12; Bandashar (5) 9-10; Charlborough (11) 9-9; Command Performance (9) 9-7; Anasiwa (2), Royal Master (10) 9-5; Corrie Gilpin (3) 9-2; Morrlsy (8), We'll Find Out (4) 9-1; Carla (7) 9-0.
