UPSET IN STAKES
Maiden Wins At Rosehill (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY. Sweet Embrace caused one of the greatest upsets in the history of the Golden Slipper Stakes when she won by three lengths from the Victorian filly, Begonia Belle, at Rosehili on Saturday. Sweet Embrace, a maiden performer, won in effortless fashion. The race developed into a huge betting medium, and eventually Tod Maid started favourite at 7/2. She found the task of winning from her outside barrier far too great, and beat only Guilia to the post. The Queensland gelding, Prince Gauntlet, drifted from 5/2 to 4/1 and finished fourth. Birthright got to the front soon after the start, and she led at the home turn, with Prince Gauntlet just behind her. - At this stage Sweet Embrace was tenth. As the field turned for home, Prince Gauntlet and Eugene worked clear, but then her jockey, C. Clare, brought Sweet Embrace down the outside. In a few strides Sweet Embrace had put paid to her rivals, and Clare drove her to the line under hands and heels. Eugene and Prince Gauntlet battled on well, but it was left to the Victorian filly. Begonia Belle, to come from the tailenders to be runner-up.
